Grove Blended & Online Learning Options

An Overview

The Grove offers several options for learning at home with both Blended and Online Learning programs for Kindergarten to Grade 12.

At The Grove, we are dedicated to assisting families in embracing a dynamic approach to learning beyond traditional classroom confines. Our diverse programs cater to a wide spectrum of learners, including those who identify as homeschoolers, home learners, unschoolers, and everyone in between. As an integral part of the Cowichan Valley School District, all our exceptional programs are offered to families at no cost.

Led by BC Certified teachers, each of our programs provides families with comprehensive curriculum resources and instructional support. Through collaborative efforts between teachers and families, we create a personalized learning journey that aligns with the BC curriculum. This collaborative approach empowers students to learn and thrive at their own pace, fostering a supportive and enriching educational experience at The Grove.

An important note about Home Facilitators

All of our programs are built to be a wrap around program, where we work closely, as a support team, with a home facilitator to support student learning. Therefore it is required that a responsible adult is at home to support the student every day. This role is most important to ensure the best learning outcomes for the student. Please follow this link to review the support team roles and responsibilities.

Nature Collective

The Grove Nature Collective (formally known as Swallowtail) invites inquisitive learners in grades K to 9 to engage with the wonders of nature while pursuing their interests. Our unique blended program unfolds across one to two full days a week, immersing students in a 400-acre outdoor classroom at Providence Farm. Grounded in place-based, experiential learning and fueled by imaginative play, our curriculum encourages students to forge meaningful connections with the world around them.

At the heart of our approach are student-centred values grounded in attachment theory, fostering genuine connections among teachers, parents, mentors, and children. The program cultivates a nurturing environment where children’s voices are heard, and they actively care for both each other and the environment.

BC Certified teachers lead our program and provide families with resources and instructional support. Collaboration among students, teachers, and families shapes personalized programs aligned with the BC curriculum, allowing students to learn and thrive at their own pace. Enrolled students in our Blended Learning Program enjoy optional field trips, workshops, and classes, with opportunities to participate in district activities and events, enhancing their holistic educational experience.

The Grove program provides up to $600 as a Student Learning Fund.  The Student Learning Resource Fund purchases resources that facilitate and enhance a home learner’s already personalized learning plan. These resources are tied directly to specific competencies/content from the current BC Curriculum, and students must be able to demonstrate their learning using these resources. This allotment is not an entitlement.

Grades 10 to 12

The Grove presents a dedicated online schooling option for Cowichan Valley residents in grades 10 to 12. Families have two registration paths to choose from: students can stay at their home school (LCS, CHSS, CVOLC, CSS, or FKSS) and augment their education with one or two Grove online courses through cross-enrollment, or they can enroll full-time with the Grove and graduate directly with us. Our purpose-built online schooling caters to Cowichan Valley families, fostering connection and support through personalized programming. The Grove hub offers in-person support from BC-certified teachers for tests, materials, and general assistance. Our staff excels in providing online support, and courses are delivered through the secure Online Learning Management System, Brightspace. Each course employs diverse instructional strategies, including text, video, interactive activities, online discussions, interviews, and tailored support for students, all without tuition fees for school-aged residents of the Cowichan Valley.

Cross Enrollment, a unique opportunity for BC high school students in Grades 10-12, allows simultaneously enrollment in courses at multiple schools. If an SD79 student requires a course not offered at their school, they can take it at the Grove, and additional courses come at no cost to the student. The benefits include exposure to varied learning styles, an expanded range of course choices, and flexibility in pacing for course completion.

For full-time 10-12 students, enrollment with The Grove is open anytime, providing access to a comprehensive range of academic and elective courses. These courses can be completed online, allowing students to set their own pace and schedule and meet graduation requirements throughout the calendar year. Full-time students can collaborate with a Grove academic advisor to establish personalized goals, enabling them to balance their academic course load and integrate academics into their schedule.

Grove K to 9 blended and full home learning options

The K-9 program provides fully funded public education options for Cowichan Valley families seeking flexible learning with the guidance of qualified teachers. Families can opt for full-time home learning, collaborating with a BC-certified teacher to tailor a self-paced schedule. Alternatively, our blended learning programs offer two-hour classes twice weekly, fostering shared activities among elementary students and families. This K to 9 initiative combines online and print-based modules designed to ignite your child’s learning passions. Elementary programs, delivered by a Home Facilitator (often a parent or guardian), follow BC Ministry of Education guidelines. Students progress at their own pace, with programming tailored to individual interests, strengths, and learning needs.
